A tablet is often the easiest way to video call family, see photos, read and play games. The best one depends on what you'll use it for, and what your family uses.
What to look for
- A big, bright screen. 10 inches or larger is easier to read.
- Good speakers and a front camera for video calls.
- Regular updates to keep it safe from scams and viruses.
- A stand or case so you don't have to hold it during calls.
The main choices
iPad (Apple)
Simple, reliable and well supported. Best if your family has iPhones, because FaceTime and photo sharing just work. The basic iPad is plenty for most people.
Samsung Galaxy Tab (Android)
A good choice if your family uses Android phones. Many sizes and prices. Settings can feel busier than an iPad's, but they can be simplified.
Amazon Fire tablet
The lowest price, and great for reading, watching shows and Alexa. It has fewer apps, and some models show ads on the lock screen unless you pay to remove them.
Senior tablets like GrandPad
Made to be very simple, with big buttons and family-managed contacts. Usually paid monthly. A good fit for someone who finds other tablets confusing.
A simple rule
Match the family's phones. iPhone family? Get an iPad. Android family? Get a Samsung. That way, video calls, photos and help from the grandkids are much easier.
