A Fire TV Stick is a small device from Amazon that plugs into the back of your TV. It lets you watch Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and other apps on the TV, using a simple remote.
What you need
- A TV with an HDMI port (most TVs from the last 10 years have one)
- Wi-Fi at home, and your Wi-Fi name and password
- An Amazon account (the same one you shop with is fine)
- A power outlet near the TV
How to set it up
- Plug it in. Push the Fire Stick into an HDMI port on the TV, and plug its power cable into the wall. Use the wall plug that comes in the box.
- Pick the right input. Turn on the TV and press the TV remote's "Input" or "Source" button until you see the Fire TV screen.
- Pair the remote. Put the batteries in the Fire TV remote. If it doesn't connect by itself, hold the Home button for about 10 seconds.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Choose your Wi-Fi name and type the password with the on-screen keyboard.
- Sign in to Amazon. Follow the steps on screen. You may be asked to visit a website on your phone and type a short code.
- Add your apps. Search for the apps you use, such as Netflix or YouTube, and sign in.
Tips to make it easier
- Use your voice. Hold the microphone button and say "Find old westerns" or "Open YouTube."
- Turn on captions in the settings if dialogue is hard to hear.
- Move favorite apps to the front of the home screen so they're easy to find.
- Watch out for purchases. Some movies cost money. Set a PIN for purchases in the settings.
- Write it down. Keep a note of which button does what next to the TV.
I set up Fire Sticks, Roku and smart TVs, and leave a simple written note. See smart TV and streaming help.
